FOUNDATION DRAWING ART110

Instructor: Joshua Field
Class Meeting Times: Mon/Wed 1:25 PM - 4:10 PM FAC 429

This course will explore a variety of techniques used to translate three-dimensional observation to two-dimensional representation. Lectures, assignments and discussions will investigate specific visual problems and explore a variety of creative solutions.

Assignments will be reviewed in participatory group critiques. Foundations Drawing is a workshop format course and as such, hands-on participation is an intrinsic part of the visual problem solving process. All class work is intended to both instill the fundamental techniques of drawing and foster creative problem solving.course objectives:

  • Students will develop and demonstrate a clear comprehension of techniques utilized in representing three- dimensional space in two dimensions.
  • Students will explore a range of physical media and methods as they work toward solving visual problems.
  • Students will learn to critically evaluate and discuss artwork.

Observation: Line
Using a variety of contour line techniques, explore the edges and surfaces of complex objects.
  • Assignment: Line [PDF]
  • Observation: Measurement Techniques
Techniques for accurately measuring and rendering three-dimensional space.
  • Reading: Sighting [PDF]
  • Positive and Negative Space
Exploring the relationship between figure and ground or positive and negative.
  • Assignment: Figure and Ground [PDF]
  • Composition Principles
Organizational principles used to create a visually compelling arrangement within the picture frame.
    Spatial Illusions
Using one, two and three Point perspective to accurately render dimensional objects and spaces.
  • Assignment: Perspective [PDF]
  • Value and Gradation: Tonal Transitions
Use gradually shifting tone to explore the entire range of value.
    Achromatic Still Life
Exploring the impact of shifting directional light on a still-life.
A Planar Exploration of the Head
Breaking curved object surfaces into their directional planes in order to better understand volume.
    Cubism
Expand planar analysis to explore the abstraction of reassembled object surfaces.
